A popular Aesop's fable, known as The North Wind & the Sun, is going to be the base of this comparison.
The fable goes like this: The north wind and The sun were quarrelling when a traveller, who wrapped himself with a cloak passed by. The sun came up with a way to end their quarrel, by seeing who can make the traveller take off his cloak. With confidence, the wind began blowing cold air towards the traveller, who proceeded to wrap his cloak more tightly, therefore achieving the opposite of their aim, and accepting bitter defeat. Then, the sun shone brightly, which caused the traveller to unfasten his cloak more and more as the sun shone brighter, making him feel warmer and warmer.
When put in the perspective of Cain's and Owen's relationship, multiple parallels can be seen with Owen being the traveller, and Cain being the sun. Owen was brought up not only in a physically cold and bitter, but also a mentally cold environment. The North, which is known for being void of life, and having a, 'kill or be killed' mindset, was the place Owen has been accustomed to live in. He grew up getting satisfaction and pleasure from people's discomfort and fear, which he would achieve from everyone he spoke to. Owen has also been locked away in the past for over a 100 years for being a wizard, and treated as a monster. These two aspects of his life basically shaped his current personality and everything thats wrong with him. His character, can be described as cold.
Then Cain Knightley is introduced. A literal walking sunshine. Liked by everyone. The polar opposite of Owen. His trait is literally, and i quote, ""Bright" - If you meet him, who's like the sun, even a cold traveler would take off their coat. In exchange, everyone's surrounded by summertime." Owen, who's heart has been stored away, is unable to understand or feel emotions like other people. This gives off the idea that he's closed off, and out of touch with his emotions, as if he has a cloak wrapped around him. The mindset of the north, and the people around him, cause him to wrap his cloak around him more, as he sees care for other things, or people as a weakness, which could be used to bring him down. However, he finds himself protecting and defending Cain... and even talking about himself to him, or opening up. "...All those parts of him... They're so swelteringly bright, I can't stand it." (source - https://schoenheit.dreamwidth.org/6062.html) Even Owen sees him as a human sunshine.
